advisory board meetings
how often do you hold advisory meetings?
Linnet,
It's certainly a delicate balance - not taking advantage of peoples volunteer time and yet keeping everyone in good communication.

In our school the meetings are every 6 months but in my opinion would be very helpful to do them at least every three months
Maria Rosario,
I agree that keeping your advisory board in the loop communication would be very important. Certainly, they would be a significant part of the decisions and direction your activities and events.

Initial meetings must be at least once a month. Once the alumni association is up and running, once every quarter would be sufficient. It is, however, important for Alumni Association Director to keep advisory board members updated on events/activities, concerns, challenges that may be in the way of running of a successful association.
Elizabeth,
I agree with your vision for special project committees and working groups to report to the board. It's always good to remind ourselves that volunteer board members and members of working teams need to sense a their role - specifically a meaningful contribution - or they will become unengaged and quit.
June Gudeman
I agree with quarterly meetings of the advisory board. Additional working group / special project committees may meet more regularly and report out at the advisory board meeting. This approach may support a high level of sustained engagement. Designing volunteer activities that affod advisory board members with opportunities to make meaningful contributions is important.
It needs to be quarterly. This allows enough time between meetings to show progress from the last meeting held. Progress can be defined as increased particpants, increased placement rates from last meeting and increased enrollment and publicity. We can also provide feedback on any alumni presentations held and the effects it had on retention.
Virginia,
Since most problems seem to be a result from a lack of communication, I like your idea of very regular meetings to make sure everyone is on the same page and keeping on top of the details.
June Gudeman
I would hold advisory meetings every month. Meetings do not have to be so long, even if it is just a short briefing it is alright. I think to be on top of information and on top of details, it would be efficient to stay on top of things by always making sure everything is where it is supposed to be.
I will have 2 a year. that will suit our needs thank you.
Ruth,
What is your goal? What do you want your advisory board to accomplish? What do you see as their purpose and who will make up your board?
