Developing effective interview skills enhances/improves overall commmuncation skills. Good communication is key to success in an organization. Many people can do many jobs. Many can come up with solutions or more effective ways to solve issues. But if they are unable to communicate well (if at all), they will most likely fall short of their goals/outcomes.
After reading most of the posts for this topic, I whole-heartedly agree with the idea that strong first impressions, confidence, and great communication skills in an interview translate to a positive hiring and employment experience. Our school is vocational and trains for the hands-on healthcare related industries.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills cannot be emphasized enough. If you don't project confidence and the ability to clearly communicate with client/patients you don't get very far.
We also have a professional ethics and communications class where we focus on building this skill set for our specific vocation.
By helping students develop and strengthen these skills throughout their training, they are ensured a high likelihood of success in the field.
Leah,
You are so right. People rarely mention self-awareness with regards to interviewing but it is key..and good listening skills are also often overlooked so glad you mentioned it!

A good interviewer has good self awareness and good communication skills. In order to answer the question, they also have to be active listeners. All of these (being aware of your self, communicating and listening) are vital to being a good employee.
Debra,
Most definitely..these are the best transferable skills.

Being able to communicate effectively during an interview will guide a student to practicing professional communications and hehaviors in the workplace.
Regina,
This is so true! Anything we as teachers can do to help students improve their communication skills will go a long way toward helping them succeed in the working world (and beyond).

By being an effective communicator in an interview, students learn how to carry the skills into everyday life. This leads to confident communication and interaction with coworkers adn supervisors.
Michelle,
I agree absolutely with this. Interview skills are really just communication skills in a particular context and as such as very transferable.

Developing the ability to feel comfortable - and confident - during an interview will help when starting a new job... Having confidence will allow the individual to introduce themselves to fellow staff, will allow the individual to excel at new task & projects, and confidence will allow them to truly enjoy the "pat on the back" experience of being chosen for the job! Plus, effective interview skills of having a good physical presentation will allow them to be accepted at the workplace as a perceived team player.
Rhonda,
This is so true! The solid foundation we create with preparation and practice can help you channel nervous energy into a strong interview.

I feel developing effective interview skills is especially helpful to the naturally reserved or "shy" student. By being prepared and having an idea of what the student wants to commuinicate she is allowed a chance to show what she can do on the job. Being well prepared can help anyone show himself or herself in their best light. My personal experience has been that the more I practice the more confident I feel. Even when the nerves kick in I still have my preparation to fall back on.
Being an effective "interviewer" shows confidence, knowledge and credibilty, all things that an employer will want in an employee.
Developing effective interview skills has a great benefit in that it allows for a student to have a real world sense of questions they should be asking in the workplace and how to properly communicate with others. In my experience, I have come across many students who have a clear picture of what they want to convey but have trouble putting it into detailed words that are received in the same way that they meant it. Being able to conduct interview practice and reviewing their verbiage and learning how to communicate the right ideas has been tremendously helpful to my students.
Effective interview skills represent so many other skills that can ensure workplace success ~ listening, communication, awareness of verbal and non-verbal cues and body language, presentation, preparedness, timeliness, professionalism, appropriate behavior, curiosity, and the list goes on. And all these skills can applied to personal life success as well.
Arlissa,
This is very true..good interview skills translate into good overall presentation skills which help in any work environment.

Samirah,
