As Instructors, we play a critical role in student retention. The instructor is the student’s first level of contact when they are having a problem and are looking or asking for help. The instructor is a role model for the student and this allows a connection for the students to sometimes ask for help. As an instructor it is very important that he or she follows the same guide lines and rules as all the other instructors. When an instructor does not follow the rules, the students will become confused and stop growing from the knowledge that is presented. This also makes the student believe that there is no clear understanding on the part of the school on what rules to use or follow. As an instructor is our part to show that the school does care about the student and his/her future by working together and with the students.

My thoughts on this verys greatly, Since I am the instructor, my greatest role is to be an example to the class, I am also a mentor, and sometimes I feel like a father figure to a lot of my students so I try to make myself approachable to the students, sometimes just being able to let them talk to me and discuss some of their fears and issues makes them more comfortable in their role as a student, also a little guideance and praise is a big helpin keeping them in class, and in school, and also talking to them on their leval my relax them, watching test scores and giving them differant types of options at looking at test...anything that i see and feel is needed to help.

Instructors are at the front line they can tend to pick up on a student behavior if they are having issues affecting there ability to succeed however these problems may be academic or personal having a positive attitude and indentiying the neccassary channels or people that can help them work through their problems will help keep them in class

In the Dyno Lab. I try to make a point of Safety and attention to detail. Understanding the proper procedures is the key ingredient to there success as technicians.

It is our responsibilty to make sure that we are approachable and interested in our students success. If we do a good job at explaining the requirements, the tasks and the scores needed to get to this level students can see what is expected in the classroom/lab situation. As instructors being consistent with the grading and evaluations shows the student that they are all graded on the same scale. This establishes basically the same experience for each student in the class.

A key to Our students sucess is to treat them like the people we expect them to become not nesseserly the people they are. Establishing a healthy enviorment where every one is treated with mutual respect. Student to instructor as well as student to student. Having them understand how sucessfull they can be with the right work ethic and attitude.

First I show personal interest in each student. I make sure I am always up to date with relevant information. I expect and model professionalism.
I try to make all learning and correction positive and constructive, and I provide lots of information on how the subject matter will make them successful.

My job requires me to be aware of students reguarding their changes in attitude, attendance,
or anything else that would tip me off that they may have a problem{s]. In many cases I am able to directly work with the student an resolve the problem myself, or direct him to someone that will. If I fail in this area, it effects the jobs of the entire staff either directly or indirectly as well as the future education of our students. Our primary job is to educate but with it comes the responsibility of watching over
our students and being aware when there is a change in their personality etc:

Each class and student takes a sperate look, you as a instructor muct be able to detect any problems they may incounter an try to help where you can or find where to send them to get the help requiried to keep them in school.

well i start with high school visits and motivation, i also go over this in sops and during the course. i always give them bait to bring them back. answer a question partially and tell them more is coming later in course info/ i try to keep them in line with why they came here and reinforce their commitment.

My part as an instructor, it's a balancing act. You have make sure the students are getting the information to make them successful while in school while at the same time the the information has to make real world sense. You also have an intrest in students to make them feel that they belong in the class. You have to motivate, discipline, make sure they understand the information, & keep up their self esteem. Then you have to find out what's going on in their lives when you see a problem arise & they start slipping. It's tough to explain. You are trying to be an all these paople in your student's life to help them succeed in their goals when they might have had no one do that in their lives.

I am very flexable with my students as far as
education. I first identifie their needs as far
class work reading, math etc. Then I identifie
any problems they may have with their mechanical
ability. When a problem is found I adjust my
schedule around so that I can give them the help
they need. I also will teem them up with other
students to help them during the class day.If
a student has problems with class work and I
see he/she is trying I will extend the due dates
for assignments.

What sort of adjustments are you willing and able to make to fit the needs of individual students, Ernest?

We as Instructors have a big role in student retention. We have a front row view of the students grades, attitudes, and attendence. It is our responsibility to reconize these potential problems and try to get the students the help they need.

a very important part as the instructor we arwe seen more than anyone else so it is up to us to make adjustments to fit the needs of the individual student

How much latitude do you have to set challenges and how much is dictated by a common curriculum?

What's the process for adjusting the challenges for a student to accommodate for their needs?

What tools do you use to determine appropriate goals and challenges for the students?

To set challenges for students and revise according to the learning abilities. Also to set an example for the student to follow.

A very important part, since we are the ones seen every day and set challenges for them, we also give them feedback on their progress through the class. we adjust the challenges for each student if necessary to acomadate each ones needs.
