Retention during an economic down turn

One has to be even more marketable during these tough times. Continuing with your education makes you even more marketable. When you do apply for a job you have more to offer the employer.

This is a good point you make,I have found that when a student is complaining about thier training,I like to point out the value of thier education to them, and get the student thinking back to the reasons they inrolled in the first place, then compare thier present state to where they were before the training started.Doing so brings back the energy they had when they started the training.

In this day and time it seems more people are trying to get something for nothing. By that I mean they are looking to receive but not give back. Some say it is the generation, they expect it to be given to them. Mayby that is some of the problem! They are not use to having to work for what they get. This could be a shock to their system. As for being lazy you would have to know what hard work realy is in order to be lazy. In their up bringing mayby they did not have to work for what they got.

On the other hand lack of jobs is likely to send MORE student s our way. We must be careful not to get complacent. We should not automatically attribute the rise in student population to our current retention efforts.

I agree with your your statement that "Anyone using the economy to NOT look for a job is just lazy." I believe that attitude is one of many contributing factors that put our economy where it is now. We need to train our students to be motivated and driven in an economy like this. Any qualified, motivated individual with a positive attitude can get a job.

Responce: Statistics and examples. Trying to get a job without the best education is like showing up to a gun fight with a knife.
Anyone using the economy to NOT look for a job is just lazy and would find another reason for not working.

Lauren, how do you re-enforce this message with your students? They hear the news about the economy and must be wondering if spending all this money will really help. Others will use the economy as an excuse to avoid looking for a job.
