Retention
I believe that retention is the responsibility of each and every faculty member. We must make our syllabus understandable and our expectations very clear, so that each and every student is aware of what is expected in a course. They must also understand the grading practice and what to do in case they need assistance.
When we are upfront with our students, that is an aide in retention.
As a former student, I always wanted the truth. No gimicks, no lies, just tell me up front. And when you offer a good product, I was willing to stay in the program and complete it.
You're right, David. The classroom is not knowledge in a vacuum. The student must learn how to apply what they are learning.
We teach students to perform a job responsibility. Sometimes we think that we in the classroom just to convey subject matter.
I also agree that retention is the responsibility of every faculty member. I think because we as faculty members are so close to the students that if there are any issues that arise they feel as if they can come to us first. But also we have to keep in mind that many students will hide their problems. Therefore it becomes us to us when we see an issue arising, that we also might take the first step by asking the student what's wrong with them. Unfortunately, I think many faculty members think that their only job is to teach and not to be concerned with students problems. I personally disagree I believe part of teaching is understanding the individual students and helping them to address their problems so that they can get the most out of your class.
Thanks
Jeff
As a director, we also play a large role in retention. Understanding the issues the students face allows us to find resources to assist the students. WE play a role by being available and present, by getting to know the students and providing a personal touch outside of the classroom. I make an effort to get to know each student in my program so they feel comfortable coming to me if they have an issue. I check in regularly with the classes. This act alone has improved student satisfaction scores and aided in retention.
It’s not just the faculty that has to take responsibility for retention. It’s up to every employee in the school to help with retention. I agree as an instructor you can make a difference. Instructors need training in order to know how to deliver the materials that they are teaching in a way to encourage the student to open up and want to be there.
