Expectations
It is vital that the expectations are set from the monent the student sets foot in the classroom. Relationship building starts with the introduction of the instructor and getting to know the student.
John, please tell us more about the short videos. Would each instructor make his/her own or would their be a generic one for each course? What's the content?

i believe that short videos would have some sort of positive outcomes when it comes to the clearity of student to teacher expectation. I teach two different classes and at the end of each class i do a team talk that allows students to tell me if i need to improve or if i'm hitting my target with their expectation that where set at the first class.
From my experience students respond better to the class atmosphere when the expectations are set during the first class and adhered to for the remainder of the class.
I think it is an interesting point that retention begins with matching student expectations with their actual experience in the program. That can be tricky, as many people in admissions may not have a lot of experience in any of the medical fields that the school may offer. Hmmmmm..... Maybe short videos would be helpful for the admissions department during the decision making process for students who are trying to decide on the appropriate program. I know we are all responsible for retention in every department, but that is an interesting point.
One thing I have always told my students is, "Expectations dertermines acceptibility!" Meaning make sure you set the students expectations as high as you can making the student only accept the best possible outcome for them.
