At my school it is difficult to keep track of the students; we have a large range of age, gender, and financial status.
Most of the time, when one of our students leave, if it is not due to a medical or family emergency it is due to financial hardships, that at this point we have no resources to help. It is very frustrating that we do not have some sort of emergency funds set aside for these students who are for the most part academically talented and very good students. On the other hand the students who are struggling because the course work might exceed their level of education, what is the focus for them, if our job is to keep the students in school, how with this particular student so you keep them focused and on track?
In a student's mind, there may be a fine line from extensive product knowledge and arrogance. Erring on the side of humility is generally a good practice.

Yes, I believe it's important to maintain moral and try to have students like you somewhat. I also, believe that if you're teaching at the desired level and understand in fact what you're teaching, it's hard for student not to like you and or your class. However, if one tends to be condescending and or arrogant, this will have a negative ripple effect throughout the classroom and institution.
Agreed, but it makes it much more difficult if the student simply does not like the teacher. It's kind of common sense, people will try harder if they like you. If they don't, then it affects every other aspect of the classroom.
Joseph, what are some actions that demonstrate concern for the student? What's worked best for you?
I believe that accountability is extremely important. If there is a pattern of absence or lateness the student should know that the teacher and administration are aware of this. It should be addressed in a manner that demonstrates concern for the student. What can we do to help you? Of course there are consequences for these problems, but we'd like to work with you to correct these problems before consequences are imposed.
Each of us can be more proactive, but it sure is nice when there is an organized attempt to be engaged. Any way you can get things rolling at your institution?
We all have hard times and every day life happens. I think we need to be a little more proactive in keeping our kids in class by finding what it is in each of them that is making them come everyday anyway. If we can fuel that fire then they will want to stay there all the time. Sometimes if they don't like a teacher they should still be able to enjoy the class because the info is being given in an understanding and acceptable way..
