What is the best way to bring awareness to the student of the pitfalls they may encounter in completing their program?

Debbie, what do you do when you find a situation where you don't think admissions addressed some pitfall?

I agree pitfalls should be addressed in admissions process. Informing students of the expectations in the program the are looking into goes a long way as well.

Traci, sounds like your school has a solid program to address expectations and needs. How long has it been in place and have you seen improved performance as the practices become part of the culture?

Starting in admissions, they must be open and honest about the schools expectations of the student. Also, a very thorough orientation. We put it out there and have conversation on the many different life events that can become obstacles as well as academic. Giving hypothetical scenarios and making sure they have an action plan. Also, the risk of academic pitfalls if the student doesn't meet expectations. The key is to make sure they know there are options for them, that we all have an open door policy and what the proper steps are to take if they find themselves encountering any pitfalls.
Our instructors, especially the intro, play an important role in identifying red flags with students. Encouraging communication at all times. Whether it class participation, homework, test scores... For example, if a student is absent and didn't communicate the instructor reports it to the Program Director and the Program Director will counsel the student. Also, keeping thorough documentation to better serve the student.

Pauline, how do you suggest potential students be evaluated to confirm they have the basic skills needed to complete the program?

Schools must also be aware of how they market their programs, and be realistic with the potential students on whether or not the she or he has the basic skills to successfully complete the program.

Pitfalls should be addressed in the admission process, Lila. Reps are expected to ask probing questions to identify potential barriers to success and help the student find solutions.
