I think being a role model for our students is very important! For me at the beginning of every new class starting this discussion opens the door for the students to talk and also give them an idea of who I am and why I'm now teaching. I would say trusting in the instructor and knowing his past is very important for their learning process.
Do these conversations spark much classroom discussion, Patrick? Do your students relate to your experiences?
I think talking about your own past goals and reflecting with students how you achieved them helps give perspective.
Thomas, do you ever have students question why you are teaching instead of still working in the field? Do you include an explanation of your transition when you take about your experience?
Explaining "how you achieved career success" sets a real life example of how it can be done or achieved by the students.
medical clinical instruction challenges my students and seeing how I succeded makes them want to emulate my success through staying tthe course and finishing the program
