Stress

Some studnts may need some help in the planning of their finacial concerns. Money is a big part of stress in a college invironment. Helping students to budget their money can help keep them in school. It is not a good idea to discuss a students concern in front of the class.

How often are classes made to appear harder than they are? How is this being done and why?

Just remember perception is reality, If you are making your class appear harder than it is than students under alot of stress give up before they start

I personally have sent kids in my class to the food bank in my town. Also our school has a program to help the students out sometimes thats all it takes to get them over the hump.I also try to get them motivated about there career. how to go out and get a part time job. Financual burdon is more than 60% pecent of the problem with retention these days.

Are money matters included in any of your courses? Budgeting and credit management are important skills that all of us can use.

Some students may need help to handle money. Just to be able get week to week,or as they paycheck to paycheck . That is real Stress

Good point Charlie. This is just one of the many stresses the students may feel. By interacting with the students, we can sometimes identify what is causing the student stress and get the m to the proper person for counseling.

sending students to different departments does no good if nobody cares. Every student is different and so are there concerns and need to be adressed that way not a tex book answer for everyone of them. Bouncing a student from place to place makes matters worse.

I concur as well. Surveys of students show that many are having financial difficulties. When questioned it is found that many begin school under prepared and have not yet learned budgeting skills.

At our institution if a student needs a ride, we post it on the instructor email. The instructors anounce it to their class to tray and find a match for a ride. We have also started a local shuttle bus in the area to see how many students will ride it. We help proide apartments so a lot of student live close to school.

Does your school have a car pool program? Is it on a bus route that might help students get to class?

I agree charles, but i also find a lot of times it can be their transportation to and from school also... some will walk if need be.. but then later i see them only if a ride is avalable.

I concur. It might help to send a student to student services.

Many schools do an extensive financial plan regarding the cost of tuition and other related school expenses. They don't necessarily do much with personal expenses in that process. Some do approach the subject in a transition, first year experience type course.

Does your school have a course like this, Charles?
