stress as a motivator

a certain amount of stress can be a positive motivating factor

We have the biggest population of international students, prayer room is open to all students and to all faiths, but because we have muslim students too and it is very hard for them to pray while they are in school and with their request we created this special place for them to pray when they want. We are not affilated with any religious orgainization. Every quarter we orgainizes events to cater all faiths, also our President is very focused on diversity and values and do what is best for our students. This is also a great way to get referals.

Interesting, Azra. How often is the room used? Is the institution affiliated with a religious organization?

At our institute we do provide prayer and meditation room with all the resources available for those students who want to use before their class begins.

I can agree, Azra, to the extent that it's properly understood and at a manageable level.

Stress can also motivate us to take challanges and this will help us achieve our goals.

Nancy, how closely do your classroom conditions reflect life in the real world¿ Do you purposefully re-create some of the problems that they will encounter¿

I agree. also. I think if they can't handle the small doses of stress that I present in the classroom, I am not properly preparing them to work in the real world. Stress is part of a job and a career. Learning how to deal with it is just one of the many soft skills I try to teach along with the actual curriculum.

Stress is a great motivator And very necessary to the learning process. It's also something that must be monitored by the instructor very closely. Students in a lab must have a timetable to work with to become more accustomed to true life working conditions in some fields. I find that working students in team systems during lab reduces some stress because they share the stress. If a student becomes over stressed, the instructor must act on that stress. Words of encouragement and a little direction from the instructor helps. This does not include giving the student the answer or performing the task for them. I find that this practice only adds stress during final testing.

Stress can be a positive motivator, but it can also be a negitive motivator. Some people thrive on stress, while some people fold under stress. If you watch their reactions you can sometimes see right away which way they take stress. But some people can hide stress very well. There is no rule of thumb on this. Be careful when dealing with someone other then yourself, when it comes to stress!

I agree that knowing your time of a given task, and having the ability to finish on time will lower the stress level.Students need to made aware of the time table they will be working in,and be prepared for it.Some like myself work well under pressure situations. Stress is what we let it become in our lives.A wise person once told me that when he was stressed out he would step back re- evaluate regoup and then go back to work.Works for me .

In some, stress is the only way to motavate. In others, Who do their work with in the time aloted, have very little stress.

i dont have any techniques on how to cope with stress in the work place, but i like to tell my students that when your in class nothing else exists. I know that the stress will still be there after, but for just a few hours a day it goes away, and some times thats all it takes to keep them moving foward and complete school.

In these tough economic times, figuring out to handle and channel stress is an important lesson for students to master. Obviously, that's easier to say than do. Do you have any techniques that you share with your students to help them prepare for the stress they will encounter in the workplace?

Stress can be a motivator for some, personally I thrive on it. Some who don't know me think I live in a tornado, I call it controlled chaos. Most of my jobs have included doing multiple things at one time. Now the problem is what happens to the student who does not handle this stress, if I were to conduct class this way they would give up. I think we have to find the boundaries for each of our students to know how far we can push them and know when to back off.

I agree Sress can be a great Motivator it moves us all we all use it on other people & students. just by saying "all labs are due in by friday anything after will not be accepted" puts a little motivation in them only to weed out the tuff student who will most likley defy or try to
