stress

stress has a major rule in students retention
you have to help the students to release their stress and to show them that you care about them

These issues are far too complex to expect faculty to handle without help. It is imperative that student services be ready to do the heavy lifting on these difficult issues.

Alway be ready to offer support outside the your school. Often food banks, emergency housing and other things we take for granted can make a huge difference. Many student never needed this type of help and do not know how to get it. Student Services may be able to support the instructor in this.

I agree that showing you really do care for students and are committed to their being successful gives support and can help decrease their stress levels since they are likely not to feel so alone.

Detecting stress is an art. Is there any way you can help new instructors learn how to do it, Joey?

Stress can take a toll in students' lives because it is very tough to go to school when you have a family to take care or if you have to work for a living. I have been in this business for a long time and I have dealt with many students with stress. I can consider myself as one of the instructors in this business than can detect stress and know how to help the students deal with it.

Our program is very short, just four to eight weeks. The first week can be a little over whelming for the student. Our instructors are aware of this and make sure that the classroom activities are relavant and fun. The instructors have the option of when breaks are to be taken so that they can gage how much information our students can ingest in one sitting. I am in contact with the instructor and if they sense a student is getting overloaded, they give me a call and I meet with the student in a very casual manner, ususally during a break where I can re-enforce their commitment.

That's very true Amgad,

One of our goals is to balance the tough academic standards we have against the need to have occasional fun, relaxing events so the students can un-wind!
