stress
i remind students we have a councilor if they need someone to talk to. and if they arent comfortable with that i am a good ear, i just might not have all of the answers but i'll give them a hand in trying to figure out how to deal with the situation
helping the students is a huge part of my day. they come with all sorts of problems personal and car I always try and help them to the best of my ability
Just giving the student a person that he repsects and talk to frankly makes all the difference in his attitude.
The same is probably true for staff and faculty, and we've seen how that turns out occasionally. The wrong thing said the wrong way at the wrong time can lead to an unnecessarily escalated situation.
It's always best to manage to process by connecting students to resources that can provide positive support to them when they vent.
sometimes when students talk about their problems they are able to see things a little differently, as if hearing their thoughts, instead of just thinking them, gives them a different outlook. Sometimes they don't need someone to have answers, just somone willing to listen.
The councilor is a good start but 9 times out of 10 the student will be more then willing to vent to you instead
I tell my students that are showing signs of stress that I have been around the block a few times and may have been in a similar situation or predicament so I may be able to help them.
Do you ever invite the counselor into your classroom so the students can make a more personal connection with that person?
Just having someone to vent to is all a lot of students need
