My school follows up with students when they are out to find out why they are out. It also helps them to return as quickly as possible and keep up with their work while out. There is also an award day for perfect attendance and academics that really excites students.
We have a staff that is willing to go the extra mile to offer free tutoring to any student that wants it.
I teach so I don't really get to see anything in practice. All I have to go by is what the students say and what management says.
What role do the faculty play in the tutoring program? Actually working with students? Oversight?
Getting faculty involved in our school's tutoring program is another way to show students we care.
Also, sometimes it's the small things that count, such as arriving before class starts and staying a little after class to talk to students.
Training for teachers, providing activities for student / faculty involvement outside of class, such as clubs, and establishing ongoing communication with the students are some of the ways we demonstrate our commitment to students.
How often do students stop by to take advantage of your services? What percentage of students get involved?
Our students integrated services department keep calling the students to be sure that they feel comfortable, specially in the beginning of the enrollment process. Also we as a Counselors, offering an open door office to any kind of situation in order to help the students to feel as important part of our University System.
Faculty and staff have events throughout the year that encourage student participation as well as have holiday meals for the students who are not able to go home over the holidays to be with their families. Faculty and staff are committed to making the school and events a "family" atmosphere and encourage students to take part in extracurricular activities.
The president of the school makes it a practice to visit every class at least once a week to say "Hi" and "How are you", and reminds the students of his open door policy.
Are these photos displayed in a public place? Do the entering students receive a copy?
What kind of feedback do you get from the students?
A great demonstration of commitment to student success! Have you been able to document the impact of this practice? How do the students respond to this level of attention?
It's great to hear that your students get all the necessary tools and resources to be successful. How often do you review that process and more importantly, how often do you tweak the tools and resources? Who leads this effort?
One of the things that we do at our institution is take pictures of all new starts in their cap and gowns. This practices reinforces the student's ultimate goal and that is graduation. The photos serve as a reminder to the student of our committment to their success. It's also beneficial for those students who get frustrated along the way. It is an encouragement to them that they can and will be successful.
Once per week, every week, our academics and supporting staff have a meeting called "Save our Students" (or "SOS"). In this meeting we track and comment on student attendance, and their overall matriculation through the curriculum. We focus in on students who have demonstrated poor performance and assign academic staff to each to meet with one on one and to help to provide a road map for success for the student. We try intervene to help them through.
As an institution our priority are our students. We are going to give the students all the necesary tools and resources to be succesful in school and out of it. For example we guide our student in how to build a profesional resume and cover letter and tips on how to behave in a job intreview.
Good. How do you get them to use it?
tutoring for students is available anytime
It always amazes me how many of our students succeed in spite of the obstacles they face - including their so called support system.
Who is on your advisement committee? Does the committee meet to discuss students or does it take an institutional services perspective?
We have a student advisement committee. I meet with all student in a particular program to monitor their academic progress as well as getting an idea if they may be struggling with anything I might be able to help with. I have had requests from tutoring to needing to find child care. Our institution has advisors for all students there are approximately 8 of us. Alot of the feedback I get from students with issues is lack of support from home. This is where I feel if htey had a good support system there would be less stress and more encouragment when they are having small issues.
