We have a student body that sets up tutoring and hellping of others and also a student of the course to help in the motivation to achieve the highest score possible to recieve the reconition of there peers
We have many practices here that demonstrate School Commitment, including the food panty, to help if a student has no money for food, a fulltime Student Success Instructor, who targets at risk students and the Student Of the Course award, which gives students a short term goal to strive for.
We offer tutering at any time. We are comminted to there education.
Commitment to our students is real, ongoing and evolving. Time and again I see instuctors and staff members reach out to help students solve a never ending number of different problems they must confront. Though we can't solve everyones problems, the fact that we are doing these training (Modules)demomstrates further commitment. There are number of programs and events presented throughout the year to help students cope. How about this, the school has a food pantry. It's for students that come into extreme situations and can't buy food. I have attended four or five post secondary schools and never heard of anything like this. I'm not saying this is the best school in the world, but I'm proud to be a part of it.
6 am! That's dedication. When do classes begin? How often do students have problems?
We do tourering, reinfors demos and survey their comments.
My school makes sure that on the first day of a new learning period that staff are ready and available at 6:00AM to assist student with scheduling and financial aid issues before class starts.
the state of the industry presentation are deleivered by a different people. It could be a department director, regional director and or employers. Also, we do have many employers on site multiple times throughout the year. If you have been a teacher long enough we have all had students drop out/quit. You cant save them all but the important thing is that you try to save them all.
Please share more details about you do the state of the industry presentation to the students. Do you have employers address the group? How are you able to get everyone assembled? Have you had any students get discouraged and drop out?
There are many. For instance my institution has commited to increase staff in key areas of the student services department with the goal of every student contact not being a transaction but an interaction. WE also are holding a quarterly state of the industry meeting to the entire student body (very well received) to discuss whats going on that affects them. During staff day the them was what can each employee do to make the student experience better than it already is. We change lives!
Do you have much success with car pooling? I've never had much luck getting students to participate; they seem to prize their mobility but don't mind missing class if they don't have their ride.
Tutoring is offered 5 days a week, before and after class (during lunch, if that is all available to the student). If transportation problems arise, we either help them get the car repaired or check o car pool availability.
In our school we stress individual value. While we always let them know that their contributions to the class as a whole is appreciated, we also let them know we value their singular input, and also that we are always willing to help on a one on one basis if they run into challenges. I will always pause a lecture to answer relevant questions, and during lab time I make it clear to the groups that it may take me a few minutes to get over to them if I am answering questions from another group. I stress that I will give them the same respect when I do get to them, and will make sure their questions are answered to their satisfaction. By respecting every student equally, we do our best to prevent academic erosion and stagnation.
This looks good. I can only pass it along to my managers. Perhaps we can do something similar here!
Is this true for all campuses? Is it a full time position?
UTI has dedicated a staff member for retention in each department. This person has been empowered to work with troubled students and be a liaison between support staff and the student population
We do a pinning ceremony, before the students go out into their profession for externship we have a celebration and each student shares what the school means to them and thanks others for their support. The also light candles to represent the glow of the profession that the school has ignited which we hope stays with them as they continue their education out on their externship
this is excellent thank you for the information
our school has a housing program,an employment progam,a student pantry,we also gather the students info and do a resume for them and keep it on file so they can up date it and get a copy of it any time.
Our school offers many activites that students can be involved with outside of the classroom, which these activities build upon career goals and social development.
