Strategies for Retention
What are some strategies to manage retention of adults in higher education and adult learning? Our problems with many students are what was discussed in the course RT 101: socio economics, first college students of their generation, unpreparedness for college.... What can we do when the student fall into these categories of stress?
I believe there is a benefit to the student when the teacher/student relationship is used to assess the student's stress level and ability to cope. On two occasions lately, students were grateful for teacher-initiated conversations in which the teacher shared their view that these students would likely be able to overcome obstacles. The student seemed to respond with an attitude of "Someone believes in me - I really can do this!"
This student has to realize that at some point good reasons for unsatisfactory behavior aren't enough. Set boundaries and expectations and let him know the consequences of non-compliance. Gently firm will help him learn behavior that will be critical for him to succeed in the workplace.
Good luck.

This is my first time as "instructor". I have a male student who is displaying the typical GAS tendancies. After reading this module, I can see where his mind-set is and feel I'm better equiped to guide him. His socio economics and "Pymalion Effect" are key in his behavior. He misses class at least once a week and always has a "good" reason why he's absent. Can you offer any suggestions for me. I have already offered him (as well as all the students) positive retention communication and do believe in their success. I do care and have expressed that to each student. Any advice would help.
