Retention

How does an institution maintain their retention, when economy is rough?

In my opinion retention starts at enrollment , I know its more so about filling the seats and the recruiters do a heck of a job filling them , but what are the reasons the potential student is enrolling in the course. I try to encourage the students and keep them informed about the realities of the field

Josh, what do you do to keep their confidence that there will be jobs available for them when they graduate? If your area has been hard hit economically, they must be concerned about jobs drying up or being filled by experienced people.

I agree. The economy has hit everyone very hard, but the area I live in has been hit especially hard. As instructors, educators and mentors it is our job to educate, encourage and nurture our students. By convincing them that we are going to help give them the tools needed for sucess in their new chosen profession they may be more likely to have better attendance which should also result in better retention.

I agree. Our primary goal at the college I teach at is to educate the students, and give them the tools to attain the job that they want. If you give the students those things, they will want to come, even if it is a struggle for them.

Doing the right things the right way. The economy may alter the definitions of right thing and right way but the principles are the same.
