Testing Anxiety

As program directors we should take the lead in developing resources for students that exhibit testing anxiety.

Study partners is a good thing but be carefull because some students may take advantage of a student who studies the subject. The timing of the test can also be a problem. If we have a test on day 4 out of 14 the Instructor has to ask the Students to read the material and go over the test without giving the answers of course

Study partners have relieved some of the stress from taking tests. Reviewing the test material in detail and making sure the student understands how the test will be given, such as a hands-on perforance in the clinic, orally or written. Making sure that the student is not only knows the procedure on how the test will be given, but also has studdied the material and feel prepared on the day of the test

Martin, does this practice really reduce test anxiety or increase the number of times a student has to deal with the situation?

It has always been my practice to give as many meaningful tests as possible. Mostly to take the test taking anxiety down as much as possible. But I also have much success in showing my students that a test is simply a tool that we can both use to evaluate our accomplishments.

What are some of the resources you would like to have available, David? What's the next step to develop them?

David, how comfortable are you with the assumption that under-achieving students are both motivated and confident about using resources?

Providing resources assumes the under-achieving student is both motivated and confident about using resources.
Consider interfacing with the student, tutoring and guiding them through the test-anxiety reduction strategies in order to increase the likeliness of success.
