support
Although I agree that the institute and instructors should be supportive to the success of the student, I also feel this is problematic because of lack of support from family or peers.
I try to identify what kind of support the student has at home during intial interview and estasblish rapport to assist each one as need be. I also try to check on my students weekly to see how they are doing in school and any of them that are struggling I contact there instructor to identify problems.
Some times it is the students first time away from home and they have no friends and they tend to get home sick. If as an Instructor we chat with a student when they stop to talk with us this will help then fell more at home. At the school we are the replacement for there father or mother they had for so many years to ask questions. So all it takes is to show you care about there thoughts or what they might be wanting to do.
You must show support and really care about your students and there future
I feel that if the student doesn't have anyone else to turn to then as instructors we need to be there for them even more. Someone needs to stand up and help these young people out. I will be there for any of them, and if I can't help with the issue I will get them to someone that can.
Just showing support to a student in any way will sometimes comfort and relax them to the point they will communicate easier Be less inhibited.
this is very true. I have had conversations with students to help them keep on with their schooling and how it will be more benificial to them later on in life.I also incurage them to grow up and be self motivated and responsible for them selvs, If the parents have lost interest.
this is very true. I can't even begin to decribe how hard it is for students to continue when the parents have lost interest. I have had conversations with students to help them keep on with their schooling and how it will be more benificial to them later on in life.
I feel the same way except I put a twist on this by trying to be that person to talk with and building a trust and someone to go to.
IF IT IS IN MY REALM OF PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AND CAPABLILITY I WILL GIVE THE SUPPORT A STUDENT IS REQUIRING.IF NOT I WILL ADVISE THEM TO SEEK HELP FROM MORE QUALIFIED PERSONAL.
If your students aren't getting any support from family and peers, they need yours all the more. They have indicated a willingness to break out of the roles prescribed by their social circle. This takes courage and will require reinforcement.
