dynamics of intervention
As part of a post secondary education system, as an Instructor, we are not trained to deal with the problems of student issues. our role simply lies in that of educating the student in the field that we once worked in.Any company employs people that are qualified in those areas that relate to personal issues.
Agree with you. I have observed over the years that institutions hire people based on their knowledge and abilities as practitioners. In my profession (electrician), we do not spend much time on dealing with emotions or personal problems with those we come in contact with. Apprentices come to me with needed electrical skills and abilities to understand problems presented to them and how to formulate corrective action. As an instructor, I have had to present a large amount of information in a short amount of time. To do this, I have had to dedicate many hours to class preparations and little to student's personal problems. I initially tried to help students with their problems and then realize that I am a sounding board for the person. This is great if time is permitted and I had answers to their problems. As an instructor, I have tried to help my students understand and apply the course material. I do not have the qualifications to counsel students with problems and I have to be careful of what information is offered. I have seen instuctors with good intent become the target of the administrations inquiry when the student blames his problems on the instructor's help. Be careful on what advise you offered because if it is used and produces a negative result - be prepared to defend your advise, especailly to the administration.
