Student Support Services
I think our campus could use some of these services to help our student succeed: tutoring, in house counselors or advisors, counseling referral programs, student advisors’ etc. I have several of students with extreme personal issues and they are trying to be committed at the same time, but it’s overwhelming for them. I have several that are struggling and it’s real hard to keep up with each one and their issues and keep the whole class focused at the same time. I try my hardest to keep reaching out to them but I really think they need more help then I can offer them. Some of the students need the extra time to feel comfortable to discuss their problems and with our hours being so limited we can’t offer the student a one to one appointment to help them out or give them some guidance.
You've touched on a very sensitive subject, Sally.
In my experience, faculty members are very reluctant to give up class time for announcements. Unfortunately, instructors generally aren't any more eager about reading the announcement to their students. Furthermore, going from class to class is very time consuming for the person making the announcement.
Does anyone have any thoughts on how to address this contradiction?
This is true but there should be more in class announcements coming from the staff members that coordinator such activities for the students, instead of just posting fliers and relying on the students to view their portal. It engages their interest a lot more if it's told in person.
I hope we can get other forum participants to tell us the ratio at their institution and how the number is determined.
Most models say that you should have one person in SSS for every 300 students. With the type of students that we get, I know that we could use more than that.
I agree with you as far as having internal personel available but it cant just be anybody. There has to be a dedicated person for such a position. I beleive the instructors would be the best candidates. The students do not see us as a threat. I know personally a lot of students have confided in me with personal issues because I am not a threat.
Is there a procedure in place to help get the support your students need? Obviously, you have a finite amount of time and may not be able to meet all the additional needs of your students.
