Attention=Retention

I find when I pay attention to each and every student it helps them feel welcome in my classroom. Showing concern when a student seems upset or distant (right away) helps to deter a major event that could lead to the student dropping out

Although this may not be too easy as a task to accomplish, giving individual attention to every student in your classroom, specifically, when you have a classroom of 30+; however, I agree with the idea that attention is key to retention. Yes, we need to have one on one with students when they change patterns, behaviors, or ways of doing things in the classroom. This can allow us to identify issues in their early stage, and tackle them with the students.

We all tell prospective students that we are a caring institution and that fact sets us apart from the competition. It must be re-assuring to the student to actually experience that care. Hopefully, your colleagues are doing the same thing.
