Counsling

It would be helpful if we as faculty were offered courses in crisis management as we are the ones directly dealing with students in crisis.

Personally, I'd love to take advantage of some type of training like this if my institution offered it. It could be a double-edged sword, though. The module is very clear in pointing out that it's important we not overstep our boundaries when it comes to counseling. I've got not real background in it, and even with a couple seminars I wouldn't feel comfortable giving students advice as that type of authority; they'd be coming to the wrong person if they wanted real counseling because it's simply not my field.

However, we should take every measure to listen to our students and offer advice where they ask; but I am always quick to remind my students that I'm not an authority on certain matters and can offer no more than suggestions based on my own limited personal experience.

I think training would help. But i feel like we get alot of help from these courses. They have really opened my eyes to a different way to look at things.

Good suggestion. Does your school have a staff development program? Learning the basics of crisis management would be valuable for everyone. Knowing how to respond to a problem and when to get help is important information.
