Intervention Techniques
What is your most successful intervention techniques to help a student open up in talking about the issues that he/she is facing?
There are no magic bullets in terms of right technique for intervention. Every students are unique and that issues are different for many students out there. From my experience, if you can get students to buy into self accountability, it gets easier for them to understand what they have to do. This is not an easy thing to do since these days, everyone blames everyone else but themselves.
I agree, every situation and every student is different. On of the best techniques to use when dealing with a student that is having issues is to seperate them from the rest of the class. They will be more likely to calm down and think a little more clearly, if they are one-on-one with you.
This doesn't work in all cases. Some students are so distraught that they simply want to lash out at someone or find someone they can blame for their problems. In that situation, after you get them out of the classroom, all you can do is let them vent (and remain as calm as possible, without appearing aloof).
I have found that every situation is different and so is every student. The technique that works is the one that fits the moment. Is a student is angry, I would calm them down first. Then start with the work, being careful not to stir up any feeling that may come about. I think it is important to meet them at there level, just to see where they are coming from.
