Problem Solving

Before one can act as a change agent for another person they must understand how to deal with the particular problem. Secondly, they must establish rapport which is a valuable trusting relationship to aid student with all of his or her most private issues. Maintaining the student confidentiality is the upmost important for the student and facility success.

Glenda, your seasons example is a useful one. Is it re-enforced at other times during the students experience?

Mohammad, good observation. How do instructors develop problem solving tendencies?

I agree with having rapport/giving advice/Faith in judgment.

I conduct the student Orientations. Students put their trust in me to know what I’m talking about.
I talk about policy & procedures…but I also talk about being in a good place and preparing for you’re out of season.

I.e.. When you have money and things are going go for you. (In Season) Bills are paid on time; you have money in the Bank and etc.
This would be the time to save money for the times that are not so good.

Out of Season…Are the Un-seen things. Car repairs, Dr. Bills and etc..
This always takes money you don’t have.

Your cycle comes and go’s just like the Seasons Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall.
It’s what we do in a time of being in Season that affects our out of Season.

We also talk about 5 reasons a student may Drop out of school. So by doing this we have found that students are more open to talk about their problems when they arise. The sooner a student comes to you with their problem the sooner you can help them return to class.

Instructor should always have problem solving tendency.

I agree that rapport is of the utmost importance. If a student feels as though they know you and that you know them, they will be likely to follow any advice you might offer. I have students who I know are sensitive to certain things and when talking with them, I acknowledge that to them to reinforce their faith in my judgment based on who they are instead of based on who I am.

i agree 100%. u must maintain a goog rapport with students to be able to find a resolution to the problem

Good points, Henry. Hopefully, your institution has a program in place to re-enforce these practices and develop skills for new hires.
