Students needs

We recently had a student that had car trouble with very little money etc...

The teacher had a roundtable discussion about this problem with other students to figure out how to handle this problem. What we found out was that there was an auto mechanic at the table and also another student that lived close and could pic this other student up and take her home.

This student did not miss a day of school and had the car repaired for very little money.

Resources are everywhere we just have to ask and look.

That's a very sensitive subject. Did the student publicly ask for help or how did it become a topic of discussion? Glad classmates were so willing to provide support.

What a great idea! It amazes me how helpful people can be. We had a student whose husband was being abusive and would not let her get to school for classes. Several of her classmates opened up their houses to her as well as the faculty letting her know that the college provided on campus housing for persons in situations like herself.

I think that is a great example of establishing community and showing how we can all be helped in times of need.

That was an excellent solution, but there are many circumstances in which the student does not wish to have apersonal problem shared with the class. In that case, it restricts us to find ways to help without the collective resources of a group.

Greg, very resourceful. I hope your students learned from this experience.
