DYNAMICS
It is important to change the dynamics of the classroom in order to keep the students engaged.
I agree, I don’t like attending seminars where the facilitator just lectures – why would we think our students would. You have to shake things up.
Making constant state changes has always been a valuable tool in keeping students involved.
David, do you notice these bonds carrying over to future classes? Do they retain that sense of camaraderie outside of the classroom?
I agree with Stan. Something I've done is to have the class create a class name or title. Often times I can take advantage of my last name and they call themselves the Back Pack. It develops a sense of belonging and teamwork.
Finding a class theme can really lead to increased involvement. Finding student's similarities is also beneficial. These can be where they are from, types of cars they like, favorite teams or topics, all can form bonds and creative activities.
Are you saying that you say outlandish things in the classroom to see if someone will call you on it?
David, what changes have you made in your classroom presentation techniques in response to trend?
It is a powerful tool. However, with the changing demographics it can be challenging, as some groups, see things differently.
I tell all of my classes that I may say things just to see who is paying attention. I also let them know that it may happen by accident and I will not lie to them if I make a mistake. I like the "let's see if he makes a mistake" mindset, because they usually are then listening t every word.
I would agree with Mr. Beam in that attention spans have lessened over the years. The bombardment of electronic media is causing us to re-think teaching strategies. Bottom line is that it is VERY important to change things up regularly while in the classroom.
Couldn't agree more. Also, I find it helps to empower the students to help create an active learning enviroment
Anthony, this implies a great deal of flexibility in the way material is presented. How do you read the attitude of the class and what options do you have to present your material?
yes being able to change from not only class to class but day to day with the ever changing attitude of the class
Mark, information about medical conditions is a tough issue to manage. Does your institution have an iron clad policy or is each condition treated individually?
That is a important part of the discussion. We, as instructors, are not privy to any pre-existing conditions or medications being used due to privacy policies. Although, we can tell when the medications wear off and behaviors change. Some of these classroom issues need professional intervention.
It's also important to recognize that some students have attention deficits and struggle to maintain focus. Changing your pace and delivery methods are a good way to keep them engaged.
Also agree gets things interesting. What works with one class may not work with another. Always find ways to get things going.Ask questions!
I find that the students who are the best all around leaners don't have problems with attention span. they ask questions and stay engaged. The ones who have problems staying focused seem to have outside interests and are distracted by that. I also change state and directions to keep everyone awake and focused because I must try to keep the class as whole involved and awake.
I do the same Sam...say or do something off track from what we have been discussing. you will know right away who has been paying attention and who has not. Then I use those few minutes for a trip to the lab to allow the students to physically see what they have missed. Back in class the entire group is refreshed and attentive. This has worked for me for some time now!
Quite simply, social media can be used to our advantage if done correctly. No phones out during lectures is a tough fight, and usually you can't win these battles. There are times when I present a concept, use 5 syllable words, and have them look up the meaning of the concept, and then report out. Of course a few will be checking their e-mail, but you have to somehow manage this in some manner. I like the end quote, "if you can't beat them....maybe use it to your advantage!?"
