A way that we help work on Academic Erosion On our campus is that we have open classroom time. This is a time that students can come in and seek help with any part of the program. We also have tutors for all aspects of the curriculum. This offering I feel helps with those that feel that they might not be good enough.
And the what, Roshally? Who sends the notice and is responsible for the outcome?
Shula, do you have a data base of information about jobs for students to explore? Do you use any evaluations to try to connect interests/personality traits with the requirements of a job?
Cynthia, are academic advisors faculty members or support staff? Does the student keep the same advisor the whole way through the course?
Sebastian, how long has your school been doing the bi-weekly reports? Has it had a significant impact on performance?
Tracy, are the clinics held at your site so you can observe multiple students during a shift? What are some of the areas that you evaluate? Do the students sign off on the daily review?
Student with poor attendance or poor academic performance will recieved verbal and written advising.
We are a new online college and are developing a student support team and career guidance center to proactively help students envision realistic results. I think consistently discussing jobs etc can help a student feel that there is a tangible goal he/she is working towards and will help them remain motivated.
using proper comunication methods between all departments to identify and adress all situations and at risk students
We have assigned instructors as academic advisors and meet with our assigned students in weeks 3, 6, and 9 (out of 10 week terms). We have their grades and comments from individual class instructors and discuss any issues the student have. Also the academic advisor is the student's liaison/advocate at any time if the student is feeling pressure in any form. This ongoing relationship develops trust and gives the student an outlet for frustration or excitement when things are going well!
At the school I work at my students recive a bi weekly report ,and also the students could check their grades on the cv portal. On the bi weekly report we let the students know that tutoring is available every day after class.
I teach the clinical portion of my program. Our institution fills out a daily evaluation on the clinic student that the end of each eight hour clinic day. This allows the student to obtain feedback on a daily basis that gives them immediate feedback on their performance and the areas that need more focus thus allowing the student the ablility to keep well infromed about their grade in the course.
We do Midterm counseling to keep students up to date on hours and grades and goal setting to improve or maintain.
I had to speak with a student about their performance because I saw no progression. There was retrograde on concepts that was discussed in the previous weeks. I wanted to see her progression each and everyday. I had to stay on top of her to make sure she was doing the things she needed to do in order to be successful in the program. With time she had areas of improvment and that was what I wanted to see. I felt like I had made a difference by being that positive influence in her life and she was able to step her game up in the field.
we meet with our students on the academics to see if there are issues we are not aware of that may be hinderng their sucess; then try to address ways to help.
We call students when they miss class to let them know their absence was noted, what they missed in class and that we want them to return. We also ask why they missed class to help determine if there are underlying issues that can be addressed to help them succeed.
Tammy , do you use a common text for your email to new students or do you personalize it in some manner? It seems to me that it would be important to avoid a feeling of a "form letter".
Sharon, what do you mean by pre-work? How do you do this?
We have a few intervention stargeties. The first one is I emial all my new students to make sure that they are doing well, as we see most of our attrition in the first 6 weeks. I also conduct Bimonthly survesy so that students have an oppurutnity to voice there opinions,
pre-work is very important to solve the students issues.
lisstening & caring will help them to solve the problem.
Trust is verry important, so act like you really care about their issues no matter how big they may seem.
