Timing

If you catch the problem early enough you stand a chance of helping

I concur, Paying close attention to students to pic up on opportunities to help, even with what appears insignificant can lead to resolving bigger problems

sounds good.

Catching problems early is important but so is follow through. Don't just help the one time. It takes commitment.

Helping students find the answers to ther problems is a full time job that parents sum times have not trained them well in problem solving so thay need help.

timing is very critical to student retention yes if you catch a problem early enough it may turn into a non-issue. also I believe that even after things become issues the right kind of mentoring or mentor can be significant if the instructor is aware of when the student is indeed looking for that extra guidence.
