Caring

If you show the students you really do care that they stay it would help immensely. They need to be more than just a number in the system.

How does impact the classroom? Does it require instructors to make any adjustments if the student was raised by someone other than their parent[s]?

Everyone needs someone to look up to. A lot of the youngier people grow up under the care of other people rather than their parents.

I agree, retension starts with us, the instructor/teacher. We spend more time with the students than anyone in school. Just letting them know you are available, and willing to try to help them can make all the differance in keeping them in school.

Why?

You need to really show the students that you care about them and there education

not thinking they are just a number, helps, becouse the word of mouth goes a long ways.if the student is happy, it will show and rub off on there piers.

Yes Lauren, without us caring then we become "just a number"

I try to show them that I care by outlining the course and letting them know that I want them to succeed. I'm here to help them succeed. I'm not here to hinder them. I will do whatever is feasible to help them succeed.

Yes I agree. I feel if you do care about the students they feel comfortable and it gives you an environment of learning.

I think its human to feel good when someone else cares. When you show that you care it helps the student stay focused and do better with studies.

Letting your students know that you like teaching and that you are there for them at all times if they need to talk.

I agree and it does not take much to do this it could be as simple as a smile at the begining of class or just checking with them if there is anything they might need and asking them by name how are they doing.

Lauren, i could not agree with you more!!!
