retention
pre requisites are needed for certain classes, students are sometimes scheduled into classes that they are not prepared for, they become frustrated and lose confidence ,resulting in quitting
What can be done to attack that problem? Are remedial courses offered? Is there a minimum skill required for admission?
I becomes much harder when you have students that can't add, don't know fractions, can't read a tape measure or read the time on a clock with hands.
I often have students that think they "know" the material as well....until they start really listening to the lectures or the things I show them in the lab situation...then they come back and tell me that the things they thought they knew they really didnt and they are very glad that they are being shown how to do it...or how to do it the right way...Ive also had students that didnt think they needed the class were very happy they had it when it was done saying they really learned alot and never knew there was so much to really learn about the subject.
I run into this sometimes, but often run into the opposite, where the students already know the material.
