Creating a motto and reinforcing it
In my class, I have a simple motto; failure is not an option and as a class, our successes and shortcomings are shared. I teach my class every day for a whole year and we do bond pretty well and I believe this is the basis for any retention program
Why don't you ask the students?
I have a question regarding the selection of a motto. How do we choose a motto that does not sound corny and yet is one that promotes success?
Appreciate your input. Thanks.
I believe that bonding implies letting students know that you are there as an advocate for them and that their success is viscerally important to you.
What do you mean by bonding, Sabina? I think of bonding as measure of relationship based on mutual understanding.
Don't you think sometimes bonding might turn into baby sitting?
I share a motto with my student consistently, which is "The average person has 68,000 thoughts a day. 48,000 of those thoughts are negative. Our society is the product of our thoughts. The secret is to turn those 48,000 negative thoughts in to positive ones.
Can you do it?"
I am a lab and didactic instructor and this gives me an opportunity for constant communication with my students. I tell them that teaching is my job and that it involves constant learning. They know that learning involves successes and dissapointments but the ultimate goal of competence has to be attained because people depend on our abilities.
Please share information how successes and shortcomings are shared. Do you use specific techniques to develop close bonds within the class?
