building a retention program
High retention is achieveble by working together as team. student has more influence from instructor than any one else.
The trick to building an effective retention program starts with clarifying roles and then developing a system that has the components working together. How do you connect faculty efforts with the support staff to meet student needs?
It is true that retention is achieved by all, but I believe that this is achieved in diferent capacities, not all doing the same thing.
Instructor's retention efforts are first and formost achieved by delivering an excellents class, one on which all the necessary support is present. It helps in the process by providing usable AV equipment, etc.
supporting staff,may -and should- be the one dealing with students when issues come up, not necessarily the instructor's who's main job is, again, make sure the class is delivered completely and with the depth of the knowledge required.
That is of course if the Instructor buys into the belief the retention is everyones responsibility.
