Incentives

One way of improving retention is by giving out incentives to the students. We have to establish something that the students will look for. We have to motivate these students to stay in school and keep them in school. We have to reward them by giving them incentives. It does not have to be something costly. We can give them extra credits or by making their attendance in class a big impact on their final grades.

What sort of incentives do you offer the students, Allen? Are all the incentives available for all students or are they offered selectively?

Carol i agree. This world thrives on incentives . They are all around us and we know as consumers, we love them ! The incentives help the students on short term goals and rewards.Sometimes all they need at times to pull them thru the down times.....

Learning, good grades, and a good job is rewarding but the incentives help remind the students that there is a much larger reward waiting for them down the line.

How do you respond to those who say learning should be reward enough; that getting a good grade followed by a good job should be the incentive and other incentives are not appropriate?

Incentives are just that. An INCENTIVE to keep doing well. Whether it is just a verbal compliment or a monetary gift, people respond to incentives.

Have you been using incentives in your classroom, Joey? If so, what do you offer and how has it impacted performance? Do any of your colleagues offer incentives?
