let the students know that they have the power.

the success of a student belongs to them, not to the instructor. they have the power to become what ever they chose. it is our job as instructors to remind them and to give the the tools they need. but at the end, it is up to them to decide how far they go.

As an effective instructor,I believe that it is essential to monitor the progress of students daily. I am never sitting down behind a desk. I am always walking around and assessing the progress or attainment of my students on each lesson or skill. I do not wait until students begin to slip. I try to tackle the "slip" before there is even a slip. Majority of the time, I know each one of my students' weaknesses. This type of proactive practice is one that I have taken from teaching in the high school classroom.

There are many factors which contribute to a student's success. However, one can not overlook the attitude of the instructor in framing the climate in the classroom. We must always support the belief, all student's come with the idea of leaving with more knowledge. In helping them reach their highest potential, we all win and in the end the "success is shared."

I respectfully disagree, I see it in a different lite. When students succeed then the success is shared between the instructor and student.

Well said. As an instructor it is our job to give the students the support and information they need to be successful. But, it is the student's job to retain that information and take advantage of the support given them to grow and improve their life and future.

Good point, Sarah. Ultimately, it's the student who must master the material to succeed. What kind of support do you provide to students who start to slip?

I forget sometimes that the students are the drivers in their own education. I see it slip sometimes when I say things like "I dont want to give this student an F." While it helps me to identify that the student is being challenged too much, it takes them out of the drivers seat and focuses the attention on me, not them as the key to their success.

Very true. You need to remind them that they came to class to learn something. This was their idea. Now they must finish to obtain that goal and idea. Just keep reminding them that they are the only ones that can, and you want them to reach that goal.
