1) Complete initial student success plans for all new students this term.
2) Review student success plans from previous term and make calls to those students so they know we still care.
3) Contact all students and ask, "how are we doing?" Feedback should always be welcomed.
I will provide more interactive classroom activities for my students. I will stay in contact with students regularly, especially if they are absent or tardy for any reason. And I will make a concerted effort to write students a disciplinarian form if they are not abiding by the rules, after having been given one chance.
1) Encourage instructors to prevent Academic Erosion Stress and remind students that they are here to seek a new career
2) Come up with an action plan to address students' perception of our commitment to their success
3)Use tools to measure staff strengths and talk about how we can use each staff member's strength to support students
Thank you! I was haveing a hard time thinking of something I could do as an instructor. Ofcourse i do take advatage of all school activities and events. The only thing I could think of is to change some attitudes and the way i look at my students.
I will complete additional faulty training.
I will attend a club activity.
I will attend a school event.
One of my main task is to ensure we can retain students in our program as some of them might easily drop if they loose interest or find difficulties in combining work, life and studies.
The three steps I would use are the following:
1. focus on the benefits of the education they are taking
2. involve the support functions of the company (registrar, dean and faculty)in supporting the student
3. set short term goals with students and check on them on regular basis.
Efforts to improve retention are continuously being evaluated and adjusted to best meet the needs of the students. Within the next thirty days our institution will implement student success interviews completed during the students first two weeks of attendance. This will provide a personal connection with student services and allow us to learn preemptively of any potential obstacles the students may face. In addition our student services department will begin to maintain personal monthly statistics identifying their student population and movement within. This practice will identify trends for the individual Student Support Specialist and give them more information on where to focus their efforts. The third item to begin in the near future is a “well-check†call to all currently enrolled students at least once each 5 week term. By reaching out regularly the students will continue to feel connected to the school and will provide us an opportunity to remind them of how deeply we believe they can achieve success in their program. This call will also provide an opportunity to identify potential problems early and address them with the students.
Notify academic leadership of students that may potentially fail course.
Provide students the opportunity to do make up work provided they follow the schools absence policy.
Prepare students for success by ensuring they have the necessary information to do well on all assessments.
1) Keep the dream alive. Every conversation will remind them why they are there.
2) Start some kind of reward program. Reward perfect attendance or holding 4.0 during the term and advertise it.
3) Come up with a way to have guest speakers. Fet either graduates or people from the industry. This needs some thought since we are an online school.
We also have a voice mail system that the students can contact us, in my classes at the start I will also give them my cell incase of emergency.
As an Instructor i will think about academic erosion and stagnation, i will treat my students a little different in hopes of stopping them before they start. Also we have some rules in place, that may rub the students wrong, i will bring it up at the next meeting. I will will be come a better role model by always being positive.
I will mention the idea online peer mentors who are experienced online students who could begin:
Facilitating discussions
Tracking participation
Training on classroom technologies
Answering questions about the course
Also, our online program is considering a program coordinator position to help facilitate communication between the faculty and students. Keeping in contact with the students is very important. I always make sure the students are able to call me, text, or email in the online environment. I always make announcements in the course to let the students know that I am available.
First, clearly communicating the class expectations and support the communication process with a clear and well written syllabus
Second, adopt teaching techniques that engage and motivate students to attend class and participate
Three, follow up with student being absend and provide regular feedbacks on their learning progress.
First, show the students that you are concerned about their education. Second, Give them a list contacts for whom they can talk to about different issues they have (ie. local employment, fincial aid ect). Third, ask for their feed back after a lecture about what things I could change to make it more interesting for the student.
1. I will check with my new students @ least once a week. 2. If any feel behind in homework, set up tutoring or study group which ever they want. 3.I will bring in student services so all students meet who they might need @ some time.
There are certainly steps I can take to improve retention. They include: Completiong a survey of all new students to get to know them better and identify early on any issues which may prevent them from being successful. Make certain the students know who to contact if an issue should arise and how to go about obtaining help and finally work on developing a trusting relationship by keeing in constatnt contact with the students, this would include weekly e-mails and phone calls to get their perspective on how things are going.
I will phone, email, and/or conference with students whose attendence rate drops, show signs of sterss, or need a boost until the end of the quarter. Yes, I will bake cupcakes, too. Unexpected treats go a long way to motivate students who come regularly, but who need more than a smile and a good grade. A celebration for final projects are great for a finale.
1. Modifying orientations to address self-efficacy. My job is to conduct orientations, during which I can assess what needs and isses the student faces. If I notice a that a student lacks confidence in one area I schedule a separate meeting to focus specifically on that issue. For example, if a student is having a lot of trouble grasping what will be required in classes, we schedule time to go over a week's worth of work. Sometimes it just takes some extra time and focus to help the student become mroe confident in their ability to succeed, thus improving retention.
2. Developing a post-orientation survey for students to complete a couple weeks into the term to determine how effective the orientation was. Student responses will aid us in modifying orientations to fulfill student expectations.
3. Revising the information we provide on our website; students might be confused about who to contact for certain issues, and we must add descriptions and clarification about departmental duties.
I will provide resources to a student problem and will follow up to ensure that it was taken care of.
I will start a student competition to have them meet new friends and experiencing the challenge of a competition
I will work harder with the at risk students to make sure that they have all the opportunities to succeed.
My school have in-service training on things like grant writing and research for publication. These allow faculty with doctoral degrees to publish in journals.
However, a persistent problem exists on retention. We put a "band aid" on the cut but we do not treat the wound. We ask faculty to monitor and put a heavy responsibility on their shoulders, beyond their teaching responsibilities.
