Keeping Students in class.

I find that students who want to go home the problem is not school, Its something out side, so if the Instructor can talk to them you can save them but you have to care, and thy know and they respond.

Did your counseling include asking the student why their behavior had changed, Gloria? Did you challenge her to identify possible solutions? Would it have been appropriate to offer her some accommodations?

How do you go about structuring a class for open dialog, David?

I agree that the problem is external because I had a student who had perfect attendance. As soon as she started working, she began missing days and being tardy. I counseled her on the importance of good attendance and she seemed to care, however, she continued to be late.

It's important to structure the class for open dialog early on. This increase of communication between students early, can help build self esteem and confidence.

At the beginning of each module that I teach I have a type of meet & greet, where I introduce myself and then have each student introduce themselves and give a brief bit of informaton about them. This way I can sometimes pick up on some point and or issues that may be helpful in the future.

students for the most part are here to start a new career, therefore they are eager to learn book materials and apply hands on application. These goals are achieve with visual aids and handouts, reviewed and explaned by the instructor. The student will then perform the task with the instructor monitoring his/her progress. The instructor should asked questions to the student and asked the student did they understand the material, then aid them with any short comings. These procedures will help the student feel a part of the school and help him/her see their input is important.

Students usually leave class for childcare issues, medical issues and sometimes weather. Otherwise they are here

I agree with this statement, I've seen the same thing with my students. I've had to learn to not get so engorged in the students problems, which was hard in the beginning because it was my first time as a career college instructor with students in my age bracket. Over the years I have learned to provide the student with a realistic solution without dismissing their feelings.
