First day of Orientation

What could be a useful tactic to use when conducting orientation to keep students attentive to what is being said, insead of wondering into space.

Joshua--

Your comment about keeping students 'on track and involved' is absolutely on track. The first day is especially important, but if we can do that the whole session, it is a big win!

Susan

The expectations should be set and discussed. Keep them on track and involve them. Include an ice breaker to get their attentionthen ask for their participation.

Angelica--

That is an excellent suggestion. Having current students involved helps the new students feel like they have acclimated sooner. It is important to help them to form some bonds with fellow students as quickly as possible.

A good tactic for First day of Orientation could be, current students showing the new students where the classroom is and introducing the new students to the class. This can help the new students feel better about coming in for the first day of school the following day or whenever the start date it.

Alex--

I absolutely agree with you on keeping the audience involved. The more interactive you can make it, the more people tend to remember. We often are so focused on giving them all the information they need to know (which is also important), that we forget to consider how boring it can be to simply sit there and have people talk.

Susan

The most important thing during orientation is to keep your audience involved. During orientation, pose questions that will provoke involvement. Some questions would be, "What are you interested in getting out of this experience?" This question may spark interst in others to join in and relate to their peers.

I can't stress enough the importance of avoiding monotone speech throughout your presentation. This can bore anyone in a short time. It is also good while speaking to give examples of past students who have made it successfully through your program and others that have not and then provide examples on each of their roles, so they have role models to follow.

Yeah our Orientation isn't tha great. After reading thru this onlne course i have found so many great ideas.Or orientation is set up like this: all he new students come to a room and i go over the rules and regulations packet then 4 other people come in to introduce theirselves (the school director, education director, general manager and the compliance director) i think this is very dumb becuase when i am done talking then i have to call all of them to come to the room and wait for them becuase sometimes they are bust so i have new sudents just sitting their. i tink it is unprofessional and silly.

Allison--

I'm not sure how your orientation is structured, so it's difficult to offer specific suggestions. Sounds like perhaps you may want to design a more interactive approach. Do you have a series of speakers? Maybe you could break up the speakers with an activity.
