Being prepared for the students!

We begin each class with a thorough overview of the instructors credentials, what is expected of the students and what the school can provide to help them be successful. I is plain that being successful also means hard work.

Larry--

It certainly sounds like you do an excellent job of keeping your students motivated. I think giving them the reassurance that they are getting a 'head start' compared to you experience is helpful.

Susan

I always tell them of my experience in the field and what is expected of them, complimenting them along the way on their projects and how I wish I had some training like them before I had started.I think that reaaly makes them glad to be where their at.

Greg--

Absolutely correct. We expect the students to come to class prepared. We should as well.

Susan

Each day I look ahead to what will be coming next and make copies or ready my materials at least one day ahead. Getting caught without the proper paper work makes you look like you dont care about there education.

I agree. I always begin a new class by introducing myself, and telling my credentials, and experience in the field, as well as where I am originally from. I then work around the classroom, and welcome each student, and find out where they are from, and any future plans for our industry.

Good point, there is another topic that can be discussed; letting the students know how what they are about to learn will benefit them in the industry. They are here for a trade, so comparing their learning experience to the real world can detrimental to their success.

Thomas--

Excellent point. They say we learn as much from mistakes as successes. Sharing the failures is also a good learning experience that we often overlook.

Susan

I also give them good and bad examples what the expectations are in the real world situations.

Luis--

That is excellent! The constant and consistent reinforcement of expectations and the reassurance of support if needed...ingredients for success.

Susan

Besides the Keys To Success presentation at the start of each course, I also make sure that I continuously reinforce the expectations throughout the term. Making certain they know I care about their progress goes a long way toward making students successful and keeping them interested in staying.

I agree, and it often leads to the students asking industry related questions and their overall satistfaction that this program will help them succeed.

Catherine-

That is an excellent idea to show them past students' work...inspiring and provides them some 'proof' that they have the opportunity to do some exciting things.

Susan

I agree that overviews are very important. I like to show my Photography class samples of past student work to get them excited and prepared for what is expected from them. The students hope to have their work included in the samples in the future.

John--

This is excellent to clearly communicate expectations and support that is available. I think students rise to the occassion when we expect more from them.
