Student Expectations

I feel that in order to assess what students expect, we are to explain what the nature of the course is that they are enrolled in. Be willing to answer all questions to help alleviate anxiety in the beginning. Set the trend for classes in an atmosphere that will be conducive to learning.

Jennifer,

I agree! Information is always helpful and puts to rest the things we 'make up' to be afraid about.

There is alot anxiety on the day of the first class of any course. Being very specific about what the course is about, what is expected of the student, how many tests and what kind of tests are given such multiple choice etc., make up work etc. help the student to start feeling under control. Not feeling in control is the main proponent behind anxiety. The more information given allows them to feel more in control thus reducing their anxiety.

Michael ,

Expectations are so important. Most people are comforted by knowing 'the rules'...it's when they don't know the expectations that fear is highest.

I feel that if we set our expectations of the school/classes on day one we can definitely calm our students. If they have a clear understanding of what the instructor expects of them they have clear goals to strive for.

Bill ,

Absolutely! Setting the right expectations and making sure everyone understands is very important.
