How to keep students engaged??
Often times students don't understand the material and won't involve themselves in class discussions to further understand the material...how could we keep students engaged in the classroom?
Cherry,
I completely agree. Keeping students focused on their end goal is a key strategy to retention.

I find that talking to them about why they are there in the first place helps them to realize if they want to accomplish that goal they have to ask for the help and engage even if it is uncomfortable.. No goal is reached with out hard work.
Daisy,
I agree! Having students participate in hands-on exercises is very effective.

Since we are in an hands on enviornment I usually lecture and demo about an ingredient then break out into groups and have each group do a quick research (about 10 mins.) using their smart phones and books that I provide. I usually have a guideline on what to look for along with page numbers and web addresses. Sometimes I take it a step further. For instance When we talk about eggs I may have each group cook an egg using various techniques to see the similarities and differences. I feel breaking out in groups and utilizing hands on activities inspires students to try and participate to understand the reasonings.
Jennifer ,
Do you have some ideas on why they don't involve themselves? I have found that often students who are as you describe above are afraid to admit they don't understand the material.
