Student expectations

On the first day of classes for our students we send the first 3 ½ hours going over our expectations of them as students. At the end of the session we then ask our students what their expectations are of us. I think this is a great tool that we use because we not only start to build relationship with the students, but how can we expect stuff out of them that were not willing to do ourselves. More times than not they have the same expectations. So I think also by doing this its helps put reasoning behind our expectations and help the student understand why that expectation is in place. We also encourage our students to hold us to those expectations as we would for them.

All students expect all the people working with the institution will treat them as ad. rep.

James,

I really like that you provide visuals and an overview of each program. The lab pictures, no doubt, build excitement!

Our program is a two year fixed curriculum. First day orientation includes all the basic campus rules and expectations on attendance, homework, etc. I also include a powerpoint briefly describing each course, with plenty of pictures of the labs. This gives the students a pretty clear idea of what they can expect from the program. I like your idea of asking them what they expect from us as instructors. I think I will steal that!

We start off by having an orientation night a week before classes start for new students. In this orientation we only spend about 45min in the classroom with the new students, during this time we dont go over any major expetations we mainly introduce them to staff and give them time to do a meet and greet with staff without all the hustle and bustle of other students. We wait until the first day off classes to go over all expectations. The way our classes run for day students is they have a 9am - 12:30pm class then a 2pm- 5:30 pm class so for these new students we spend the whole first class (3.5 hours) going over expectations and with our night students their classes run 7pm-10:30pm so we spend this class also going over expetations as well. Also at the end of both these classes we like to aske the students their expactations of us. I hope this answeres your question.

Beth,

I agree. Am wondering how long your orientation is if you spend the first 3.5 hours outlining your expectations.
