Student "Friends"

I have several students who have become friends with one another and tend to compete with each other. I have a difficult time keeping the focus on what they received and not just competing for a good grade.

I have found that the friendly competitions help. The students learn to support each other while also doing the best that they can.

I too have seen this effect work for the good and the bad. In one sense the rivalray causes the students to focus and really absorb the material so that they can out compete their friends. On the other hand when it comes time to discuss the work the students can often get cought up in the scoring and fail to absorb the lessons form thier mistakes.

It's hard in massage therapy to "compete" other than on tests. Since our world is very hands on, we "test" on an individual basis to make sure they know their strokes and have continuity in their work.

At my school, we have found that 'friendly competition' amongst the students regarding academics and especially in regards to attendance to encourage postitive attendance and facilitate study groups withing the classes to improve initial passing rates. This also creates a sense of community and accomplishment with the students as well.

Amanda,

Great point. It's great to have students become friends and assist each other, but keeping them focused on acquiring the material versus getting a good grade is the goal.
