I absolutely agree. Setting realistic expectations is essential in good retention. Do you do specific things that facilitate this?
Susan
The student should be told what is going to be expected of them and not give them false expectations just to have them drop out in a few days..

Obviously, the answer is that the classroom is really not a 'real' workplace setting. They do, however, have the opportunity to practice and master some skills they will need. In addition to the actual 'hard' skills we are teaching them, they work in groups and learn some time management, interpersonal, and leadership skills which is what they will need to have in their profession. Also, the classroom provides a 'safe' place for them to practice those skills -- ideally they make the mistakes with us rather than on-the-job!

I believe what you say is true, thaat we are trying to prepare them for their chosen careers, but does the classroom setting truly give them all they need to know for the real world for their career, or are we limited in the reality of any chosen field since we are in a setting of the classroom?
Try to make the student feal welcome and that he or she is just as important as every other student also make the room a part of this process.

Very true! At the end of the day, our job in the classroom is to prepare them for a career. That includes their behavior, time management, skills and interpersonal interactions.
Susan
give them importance of classroom behavior for the benifit of their career
The first day ,they need a special atention in class . all the materials must give them in the first time due to the student need to answer the book since first minute in class . They need to feel confortable in class and we need to present them to the class and explain what important they are .
True and from the beginning to the end tie it all together, for an expected outcome.
The first day i like tohave a "sacraficial lamb", a student that breaks the rules and you nail him, after that the rules are clear and the class is smoother. usually if the offending student does not repeat the behavior i tend to loose the paperwork from the first day. taht way the student still has a far chance as the rest of the class.
I do that every day in the classroom. Reenforcing why they are here and what they have to look forward too.
Make the student comfortable in the enviorment that they are going to be learning in...
The first day of class you need to lay out your expectations of the class
