On-going after orientation
Not all instructors interact with new students, however it is equally important for all instructors to keep the same consistant message of all aspects of the orientation messages.
As an instructor i deal with this everyday all staff has to stay consistent with the rules.

Very true. This is unfortunate indeed. Not all being on the 'same page' has very negative effects in and outside the classroom.
Susan
When inconsistences exist between dept's, as the student becomes more familar with the program, they start to become dissatisfied with their whole expierence. They develope a sense that not all staff "are on the same page". A negative response to other attempts to correct statements made, are sure to follow.
This is everyone duty to make the student part of the family.

Your statement and example are very insightful and reinforce the importance of consistency. We need to decide what we are willing to 'back up' when we establish policies.
Susan
Your statement about students picking up on inconsistencies is so true. Our institution stresses occupational professionalism. We have a dress and grooming code. I recently spoke with a student who was out of compliance to both. I asked him if he had been spoken to by him instructor or staff and he said no. His statement to me was "Some instructors care and some do not." As staff doing our best to deliver a consistent message is important at every level.
Donald--
Completely agree! While that doesn't always happen across the institution (not just faculty, but all departments), it is ideal to have everyone on the same page and singing the same song. Students will pick out the inconsistencies in a flash.
