I dont get students until they have graduated the from the core program. So yes i give them an orientation to ground them into why they selected this manufacture specific training and how successful they and the company will be and how they should be proud to be with such a successful and traditioned company.

The first day and through out the coarse I explain to the students why we are here. I also explain to them what our industry expects when they get out in the feild. Good enough is not the answer. I tell them who can help them in times of struggle. As long as you reasure them that people are here to help they are less affraid to ask for help.

I find setting the standard of expectations on the first is helpful. On the first day of the new students path for further education it is important.I have found most students have already sat thru "SOP" several times and are board with the same thing phase after phase. So I change it up alittle along with going over and having the students sign the form.I also explain how important it is to follow the rules because they will have rules to follow thru out their life.

Excellent point...I think almost everyone who has gone to college has some stories and these are very encouraging to others to let them know we all go through those times.

I give them the"what's in it for me" presentation, what will be learned, how labs will be done, the time it should take to complete the labs, and why this information is important to their career.then about help, I turn them towards student services, fin.aid, or if something is trobling them, I send them to my edu. manager.

Steve.I like to let them know that the hardship they may be faceing now, will be well worth it down the road.{something they can tell there kids/family about with pride) Let them know that they are not the only ones that have been through this and that they can make it , also what help may be available if needed.,

I point out during the SOP's that help is available with tutoring, employment, food , houseing, etc.I also stress the importance of professionalism,i also let the that i am hear to help them as well.

It certainly sounds like you make every effort to assist your student to your environment. That personal touch is incredibly important and meaningful.

Ilike to ask if any one has any particular problems ,to let me know during the course and we will try to get then help with any issues they may have . or at least try to get them some guidence.

Because the students entering my classes are very near the end of their time here, I do a shorten review of the areas that can be of help and ask if everyone knows where they may obtain information if they are not coming to me or the management for ford Fact. Most are concern with what they are required to get out and what is needed and when. So, we talk about them completing the courses and getting out into the field to begin their future.

I always address students concerns, whatever they might be in the first couple days of class. I review all of the backup available to them by department. If a student has a concern or issue make SURE you help them resolve it. Sometimes this means you have to walk them down to the correct contact as many of them find these type of thing to be intimidating. One of our key responsabilities is to see all of our students are happy with everything going on relating to their learning experiance at our school.

Yes but you need to make it brief an to the point not to take hours to here the same thing you just heard three weeks prior. After hearing this for 1 to 2 years you can see why some students pay very little attention. After a certian time in school it should be left up to the student to comply or he knows what can take place it is his responibility now.The instructor should always be there to give additional guidiance if needed.

Steve,

On the first day of the course (19), After completing SOP's, I will have an introductions section, where all of the students introduce themselves to me and the other students in the classroom.
After all of that is done, I will give an outline of the class and lab subjects, grading proceedures and available scores for tests and labs.
When that is done,I give them a course schedule and at the sime time, I briefly discuss the focal points of each section. when this is all done, give them a safety tour, around the lab and the school.

There is a benefit because the students know what you expect from them and if they don't follow the rules they know what to expect, also this helps ,in some cases, keep them going with their dreams.

Steve--

You are absolutely correct about goals. Our students need them and we do as well! It helps us to stay focused and balanced.

Kenneth--

What an excellent idea!

Be postive with newer students by asuring them that you will help them with those things that they not sure of.Like telling them to talk with a specific person in that deptment. Talking with them one on one to reasure them that all deptmartments are there to help them. Putting my cell phone on the board for them to reach out when need be.

I think the first day orientation is very important. I have each student talk about there goals and I help talk about how to get them there, and how importent goals are. I think letting them talk about what they want is fun for them and a great look at my students also.

I like to give them a 3 week planner that covers a day by day detail of what they will be learning.letting them know what to expect out of the course helps a great deal.

Yes this is key this needs to be done i ask them were they would find out how to do ? and if they dont know i let them know I try to have a list of things to do in the area and what depts can help in a sertin area
