No one likes to come to a strange enviroment

Make the student feel more comfortable in the classroom, and they can relax and learn what they need to.

Agreed! I have all sorts of intro tricks but I wont begin actual class and teaching until I get the sense that we are all relaxed and eager to begin.

Agreed, if students don't feel comfortable they will create excuses to not attend classes, study, and learn in the classroom.

You can make students feel at ease by telling them a little about yourself. Then you can ask each student the same as a good ice breaker.

I agree. Orientation can be a very helpful transition for new students. Do you use any specific activities to accomplish this?

Susan

An orientation/open house is a great way for the new students to meet and talk just to break the ice. This way it gives them an idea of what to expect on the first day of class.

I run a massage program so being comfortable is paramount in my program. It is difficult to ask someone to take their clothes off if they do not feel comfortable and safe. We try very hard to create the most user friendly program at our campus.

Susan--

I have also found that it is easier for students to express themselves and to interact online. Are you experiencing the same?

Susan B

I agree. In live chats I always begin with an introductory session in which students tell where they're from and what they're studying. I also include a survey in the chat that asks them how they are feeling about taking the class (bored, intimidated or excited). Then we talk about how they are not alone in their feelings, that most of their classmates are in the same boat. This seems to alleviate some initial anxiety and put them at ease.

I would agree that no one likes a strange enviroment. We should make the enviroment as comfortable as possible for every student by having a smile on and being positive. We also make a more comfortable enviroment by having the orientation more active rather than passive.

Open houses are a great way to help potential students feel at home during orientation. They can become very comfortable learning their way around when they are just visiting and there is no pressure.

That is an excellent point! Yes, we need to be sure the classrooms are both informational and engaging, but you are correct. We certainly need to pay attention to the other issues as well. It is the 'total' experience.

Susan

Jim - I would also venture to say that the classroom is not the only environment that should be of our concern. I've worked in education for over 10 years. I hear it time and time again. Students discuss how they pay thousands in tuition dollars but do not have a decent place to sit and rest in between classes or even have a bite to eat.

Orientation is a great way to make the students feel at ease. Icebreakers and quick games are a great way to get students to interact and stert to develop relationships. Unknown places are much more comfortable when you know your not alone.

agreed. I know for myself how frustrating it is when you can't find something like a classrooom, or building. Comfort level is super important for the student to WANT to continue in your school

Students should not only feel comfortable in the classroom , they should feel comfortable any where at school for learning to be at it's maximum.
