STUDENT HELP
WHEN NEW STUDENTS ARRIVE AT A NEW SCHOOL THEY NEED A LOT OF CARE. A GOOD SCHOOL AND STAFF CANGIVE THIS HELP WITH A GOOD TEAM EFFORT TO MAKE SURE A STUDENT NEEDS ARE TAKEN CARE WITH OUT A HASSLE.
We have a group of student ambassadors that we know we can call on to help. They include current students and graduates. They help us at orientation and different functions on campus. We find that it is better to help the new students get oriented and comfortable by talking to other students. It helps them feel like they fit in and that they are getting the information that they need.

I agree! Making sure students understand all the available services if important. And, I don't think we can tell them often enough. We throw so much at them at orientation, they really can't retain it all. Realistically, they need to be reminded regularly.

True, i think one of the most overlooked things is the staff support for the students. I believe that some students are not aware of the help and support that their institution has in store for them and they need as an institution we need to work on their awareness for the help.
Paul--
That is a great idea to have information ready for them to complete. It helps get that part 'out of the way' and also something to do while they are waiting.

we have a greeter at the room we are using, the students sign in and find a seat we have their books and binders with papers that need to be filled in so we keep them busy until we begin the class orientaton.
Jack--
Excellent point. It takes a coordinated team effort to best support the students. Do you have specific programs at your institution that build this effort?
