Is that what its like?

Is that what it's like or is that what you say it is like?
The first day is intimidating. Some of the fears of the new student are unfounded but some of them are true.
I believe a good orientation should include seeing what the actual class are like and how the subject matter will be presented.

Laura,

Excellent point. It is so important to give students a true picture of what they should expect.

I think both of you are saying the same thing with telling it like it is. I agree. A popular complaint from students is "That isn't what I was told when I started". I realize things change over a period of time, but starting them off with the current, updated information is so critical.

It is a fearful day, but a good attitude on both the administration and students is good. Try not to be to up beat or plastic.

I disagree somewhat... The orientation should be an upbeat and positive experience but not misleading. They should know exactly what to expect but understand, the world they are entering is nothing like the world they are leaving.
