I have a issues with students who do not attend school orientation, they tend to be unaware of the rules that are set forth for them. the should have been discussed with them by the admissions rep, but things always get missed, and that is where orientation comes in. I find that students that do not attend orientation seem to be missing something and have a hard time adjusting to college life.
I agree, those who miss orientation tend to be miss informed and they assume alot. They are extremely unaware of important information that can affect they ability to do well in class.
Our school does a pretty intensive orientation with a representative from each department. However, I am not so sure how much of the information is actually heard because of the amount of emotion running through the student. Therefor, I do another orientation myself on the first day of class and in detail again review rules and regulations, give a tour, have former students share their experiences and also do some interactive activities setting a scene of comfort for all. Overall, I have a very high retention rate, but sometimes there is just nothing you can do. Some people are just not ready
I agree - I can't imagine not having mandatory orientation. We always do that before they start any classes - so so so important
Amanda,
I assume from your post that orientation is not mandatory at your institution? I do agree, students who attend orientation seem to be much more prepared than those who do not.

A thorough orientation is a must if success in the classroom is expected. All aspects of the school need to be explained to the extent that can be. The student should have the opportunity to reinforce the decisions made and get acclimated to the changes needed and expected.
